The Art of Heavy Rain (Part 2)

Cinematography Heavy Rain uses a character-based interaction model. The camera model is context-sensitive, but the angle is switchable by the player. The character is shown from the camera angle most appropriate for his or her current location in the world. Characters also look and move their head around, which adds more variety to their natural walk cycle. This lets the designer play the role of a cinematographer; and while this is often not a good model for fast-paced action games -- as it’s often disorienting to the player who needs to see obstacles and make educated inferences based on information presented -- this works well in Heavy Rain because of button mechanics involved in the action sequences. Different camera techniques are also used during scenes. For example in The Mall scene where Ethan is searching for his lost son Jason the camera changes from a calm, steady view to a shakier handheld one. The camera is also brought up to Ethan’s shoulder to allow the pl...

Designing a Level In God of War (Part 2)

Building a Level Levels are blocked out in basic shapes and spacing by the level designers. Anything built can be sent over to the team’s development kit -- be it the whole levels or pieces, to view a specific section of the level. After the block-out and collisions are built, the level is now in a playable state. Environment artists can lay the assets down in the place of the blocks. The level in progress will then be iteratively tested with both block-out and any placeholder/completed assets. Kratos’ model is also used to test and navigate around the level in development; Kratos' model is also used to measure the scale of level assets and height of walls by stacking one model above the other. Deleted Levels In God of War there are a variety of level types, including underwater and desert levels, but most center around the marvels of ancient Greek architecture. There were also many partially-complete levels that were cut during production, due to time constraints...

iPhone 6S Review - Phones of 2015 Year in Review

Hotline Bling First off, a very Happy New Year to everyone! Let's make something of this brand-new wonderful fresh start!  Sappy motivational cliches aside, on Boxing Day - which is something of a Canadian Black Friday - having been sick of my painfully-slow Galaxy Note 3, I've had for the past two years (not my choice, it was a gift from my dad so I had to take it!), I picked up the new 6s; the last one at Best Buy! 16 GB, black and here's what I think of it. Having owned only iPhones all throughout my cellular life - until my last Android phone - I decided iOS is the only platform for me. As I wrote in an earlier article, with the android, you can really make the device your own. No two are alike. There are several brands offering phones running Google Android's 5.1 Popsicle or Krispy Kreme or whatever version is out now.  With Apple - there's only the iPhone. So every phone essentially looks the same. Yeah the iPhone has some insane cases available, ...

iPhone VS Android - Quick Review

This  or that? I used iOS 5 years before I got an android. It was a gift, actually - a Galaxy Note 3 that I've had for two years. I had an iPhone 5 before (I don't know where it is now) and loved it. iMessage, FaceTime, the camera, the display, all my apps and games - even unlocking the phone was fun (I'm lonely okay?) I never thought I could part from Apple's platform - then I got an Android for Christmas. I didn't ask for one, but my dad got the same phone and thoughtfully decided to get me one too. So, I've been stuck with it for two years - and I never thought I'd say this, but it's perfect for me! The stylus mostly. I'm an artist, so being able to write and sketch ideas on the go is amazing ; it's like a modern day Palm Pilot. I have (almost) the same apps as my iPhone (sans GTA III, Mass Effect Infiltrator and all my zombies games, unfortunately.) But which do I like better and who should go with what? I think...
