Rise of the Tomb Raider - First Hour

3 years of waiting - 3 months of Xbox jealousy Many of you on PC will know our first AAA game of the year is Square Enix's Rise of the Tomb Raider -- and let me just say this game is gorgeous . I preordered it a few days ago (for those wondering if that was a good idea, I have a post on that), preloaded it and played it at the strike of noon. Maxed-out the settings immediately -- which you can very well do on am Nvidia 960 or 970. If you have a 980, 980 ti or Titan X -- then beast; but definitely play this on the Nvidia 9-series if you're team green. For those on ATI AMD, I feel sorry for you. Even though Lara's hair will look just as good. When I launched the first level -- a snowy disaster zone -- I felt like taking a plunge off the cliff for fun, just like the original -- and Halo of course. The physics are fantastic, by the way. The flurries fell so naturally and the footprint tracks in the crisp, white snow are better than Arkham Origins and Battlefro...

Published a Book? Get Into Libraries!

Easier than writing it  My new children's book " Prissy Little Chloe " is starting out in libraries across Toronto. I'm really excited about that -- namely, it's far easier than I thought it would be! First Contact Once you've gotten your book in print, do a Google search (or your search engine of choice) for any local libraries. On their site under the "Contact Us" tab, you should be able to click on their email address (if it's not hyperlinked to open up in your mail application, simply copy and paste it.) Next, shoot them an email of course! This is sometimes more efficient than a phone call, as it gets redirected to the department that can help you best.  Here's what I say: Hello,  What process does the _____ Library go through to order books? (if you're self-published) Would you consider Amazon-published ______ books? Thank you! or  Hello,  What process does the _____ Library go through ...

Symptoms of Video Game Withdrawal

Not watching tv is the easy part - I only watch The Vampire Diaries anyway Plus lot of shows are on Holiday break - until late January. Fine. Because I had my office set up in the living room, I had to move my desktop upstairs so we can put the gigantic Christmas tree up where it was. It's still there! That's okay too. Because it's a huge tree and all. So I lug every part of my gaming setup up the stairs, which takes half an hour or so.  That's my desktop computer, whole desk, chair, headphones, speakers, Xbox controller, plus I carry my whole bedroom with me compartmentalized in my drawers, so that's an extra 50 lbs up a flight of twenty-five stairs. So I set it all up, which takes another half-hour. I turn my computer on to game the stress away. I launch Black Ops 3 Zombies, my favourite multiplayer game and find a match. That only lasts twenty seconds, because I host and someone sent me a message different from the occasional ...

Exposing "Free" Offers in Business

Of course they're going to try to sell you something! I'm going off to a Publishing seminar downtown Toronto, in a few hours and I'm curious to see what I can glean from it. As a newly-published Children's book author , I'm hoping to find subscribers for my list to show off my snazzy audiobook digital  flyer  to! Well, getting some good, honest  reviews  for my new puppy cartoon Prissy Little Chloe: Time of the Year, would be sweet of course! Networking is one thing. A lot of these "free" seminars that happen at hotels, aren't free. The hotel has to pay the speakers, really mostly out of the attendees pockets - as a lot of them decide to stay for the duration of the conference. Brilliant. I won't be one. Not because I don't love a weekend getaway, but because hotels for me, are a last resort - unless, I'm staying you know, at a resort. I can sleep better in those beds, anyway. With any sort of training, especially a pa...

Gaming Platform Exclusivity - Who Wins That Game?

A Daring Expedition - no. A Dangerous Endeavour. Tired of my drama? In layman's terms, it's a risk. Why can't we play God of War or Uncharted on Xbox; and of course, what about Halo? How about Heavy Rain? The most recent example is Rise of the Tomb Raider's for the Xbox One - released on the same day as Fallout 4 actually. Hmm. Choosing game release dates. I could write a whole post about that, but the gist of it is do not have two games scheduled for the same release date! It did not do Tomb Raider justice; we've been waiting for some 5 years for Fallout 4. I'm not sure if they thought people would happily bundle the two when they line up outside Gamestop at 12 midnight, to sort of ride off Bethesda. In short, it apparently didn't work. Now they have to bundle it with an Xbox to make up for it. Which brings back to the topic at hand. 2013's Tomb Raider is hands-down my favourite game reboot, ever. Where would games...

The Easiest Way EVER to Publish Your Own Book!

Done in days! The decision made I've always loved to create children's books. When I was in primary school, I never spoke to anyone. I had just changed schools in first grade and was super bored with the idea of learning to speak French. So I would sit at my desk, take out a manilla paper notebook that I got from the whole stack on my teacher's desk - they were for the kids anyway, she just hadn't given them out yet - and draw Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog comics. They were advanced, witty humour; not the gross-out kind, most six year old kids find funny. The kind of humour that was ... book material. I wish I could still find them. When I wouldn't talk in school, I would come home and start running while screaming down the place. Yep, problems from early on. My mom couldn't believe why the school board thought I was mute. Art was my outlet. The year was 2003 and my mom told me I need to get a children's book out there.  Fast-forward 13 odd yea...

Reading in 2016 - eBooks vs Paperbacks

You're going to read this year at some point May as well get an answer.  The eBook craze  They've been going strong for the past 10 years - just in the past 5 years becoming accessible in your pocket, not just through pirating or spam chain mail only. eBook readers read about 25 books a year - and look like they. Having access to all the bestsellers in history, is enticing enough to put out that bookshelf you forgot was in the corner of your office. But what about the feel of flipping just one more page, a few more pages, before you set the paperback aside for the night, because you have to work in five hours. iPads can try to emulate page-turning and it looks cool. But for some, it's not as satisfying. They say they really like the smell of compressed dead trees - for the sake of authenticity. Which is another thing! It costs publishers almost zero, nil, to produce eBooks, after formatting. They're giving everyone the book file ready-to-download. ...

iPhone 6S Review - Phones of 2015 Year in Review

Hotline Bling First off, a very Happy New Year to everyone! Let's make something of this brand-new wonderful fresh start!  Sappy motivational cliches aside, on Boxing Day - which is something of a Canadian Black Friday - having been sick of my painfully-slow Galaxy Note 3, I've had for the past two years (not my choice, it was a gift from my dad so I had to take it!), I picked up the new 6s; the last one at Best Buy! 16 GB, black and here's what I think of it. Having owned only iPhones all throughout my cellular life - until my last Android phone - I decided iOS is the only platform for me. As I wrote in an earlier article, with the android, you can really make the device your own. No two are alike. There are several brands offering phones running Google Android's 5.1 Popsicle or Krispy Kreme or whatever version is out now.  With Apple - there's only the iPhone. So every phone essentially looks the same. Yeah the iPhone has some insane cases available, ...
